Rosin- Cannabis Concentrate- What, Why, How?
Image via: Motherboard/Vice |
I had a spectacular visit to my friends over at Black Alley Craft Cannabis last night, and they were demoing some pressing of some fresh rosin.
Rosin is a cannabis extract that is made using pressure and heat to liquefy the resin glands of flowering cannabis plants, and concentrate all of that goodness into a sticky, sap-like substance-removing all of the extra plant material.
Why? From a medical perspective- it is never a good idea to start smoking. Including cannabis. Human lungs are pretty good at what they do, as long as we don't ruin them, so when it comes to concentrates- LESS IS MORE. Having to only inhale minute amounts of vapor or smoke to achieve the same results.
Unfortunately cannabis extracts are still illegal for sale in Canada in the early part of 2019, with a fall target of having some legislation drafted around the specifics of edibles and extracts.
But~! You're totally allowed to make your own~!
BHO extracts are extremely dangerous, with explosive / flammable gasses and open flames being the cause of sooooo many fires and needless injury. Leave that to the pros.
Rosin is awesome, because you don't need refined butane or liquid Co2 to get started. You can really do this for about 50$ - or whatever the cost of a hair straightener would set you back. With a bit of technique you can press as little as 1 gram of bud and still come away with a few decent dabs.
Now- this process is not very $$$ effective. With really resinous bud and good technique, you're probably only going to be getting 10-15% return (1g = .15g rosin if lucky )
One of my personal favorites ways to enjoy the flavor from concentrates, well made ROSIN can be on par with the best BHO extracts, and until the market has made those readily available, you should really try this out. ( Just DON'T use your wifes straightener. She will melt you )
Now if you want to spend a bit more ( read A LOT ) you can start getting your squish on with much better returns. There are a million and one you tube vids, showing different products, but you might not even have to buy one yourself. I met a fellow who runs a shop here in the city that offers use of their community rosin press for 10$ a squish.... Now if only I could find his card....
