Cannabis Careers: Age-Checker / Door Personel
Be like Swayze- But without getting chucked through a window! |
If you've had the chance to visit a retail cannabis store in Canada, you have surely met this guy. He's the one, usually stuffed into a tiny foyer, or next to a plant as you round the corner past the door.
He asks for your ID- makes sure its legit and welcomes you in.
I probably would have just slid past this particular position, but every single shop in the country is required to have them- and the pay is pretty decent for an entry level job @ $38,000 / year ( Hobo- Vancouver)
Being a door man isn't as glamorous as that Studio 54 documentary made it seem. But you do get to have a bit of power- enforcing strict occupancy, keeping the belligerent and inebriated out- and being the friendly smile on your way into Ganja Land ( not a real place )
Unfortunately this job doesn't feature much in the way of luxury accomodation. Most stores will have you positioned next to a doorway that is always opening and closing- so an acceptance for standing long hours while wearing a scarf and gloves indoors, will certainly help you in the long run.
Most people are pretty stoked on their way in, unless you're dealing with opening week line ups, you probably won't have too many negative encounters. You'll co-ordinate with in store management and security to ensure capacity is maintained and traffic is flowing smoothly.
If you've got experience with security, hosting or just looking to get your foot in the door- This position comes up often and can often lead to other in store opportunities in front of house with sales, or back of house in fulfillment.
