There is a lot of information to disseminate when it comes to Medical Cannabis use compared to recreational cannabis use.   You might ask...

"Why bother with a prescription if I can just go buy it at the store?"

A: If you don't currently have a chronic illness, or an inability to treat symptoms of your condition with pharmaceutical medications- Medical cannabis might not be important to you... and it is EXPENSIVE. Although there are more and more insurance companies starting to cover prescription cannabis, you might not have access to said insurance.  In my case with multiple sclerosis, I was told I would not covered by many providers, due to "catastrophic illness." Thankfully the Canada Revenue Agency considers cannabis to be an eligible medical expense- So keep your receipts come tax season if you have your prescription already.

B: Many people are unable to consume cannabis by smoking or vaping- and with the laws currently prohibiting the sale of medicated edibles, many patients are searching for a pharmaceutical grade product, with zero pesticides, molds or fertilizer toxins- and these LP's can certainly provide that, with lab tested, quality controlled, scientific standards.  Any federally licensed producer has similar standards, but many of the medical forward companies are in partnership with big pharma giants.  This allows a research and development approach to treating patients rather than the breeders looking for record THC, flavor profiles and garden yields. Not that there is anything wrong with that!

C: You can apply to grow your own.  The pricing of recreational cannabis is set as a luxury product, and not purchasable in bulk. For someone who has a need for larger amounts of cannabis, for example- to make edibles at home as an alternative to unhealthy smoking, this becomes very useful.

Most residents of Canada can grow up to 4 cannabis plants without any government oversight- However in Manitoba, this is still provincially banned, meaning you could be slapped with a 2,542$ fine for sprouting a seed.

I am exploring the options for Manitobans living with disabilities to meet with healthcare providers, compassionate pricing, choosing a licensed producer as well as navigating the application process to become a self provider.  Exciting times!
