Van Der Pop is a fun name to say- Van Der Pop Cloudburst, sounds like he could be an eccentric uncle in some European children's tale.
I have written previously about their dynamic brand strategy, "Started By Women, For Women" as a lifestyle brand, with education, health and communication being keystones to their identity. Strong social media presence that likes to keep their imaging discrete, with product names like Cloudburst, replacing the less delicate- Cold Creek Kush.
Having been purchased by cannabis giant Canopy to complement their portfolio of brands, which also includes Broken Coast and Hiku. The last time Winnipeg received a shipment, I missed out on a chance to grab one before they sold out. NOT THIS TIME. I saw 22.8% THC and ran to my local shop a.s.a.p.
Opening Inspection: 9.5/10
Large, super dense and frosty hunks of green gold. I am impressed immediately by the tight manicure on some semi irregularly shaped nugs. Buds are lightly sticky to the touch, but breaking in- I would say this is THE stickiest sample of the year! Buds have a dusty-rose look from off-pink pistils twisting inwards. Trichomes are short, thickheaded and phenomenally saturated.
The pistils are covered in trichomes too- I wish I had a scanning microscope- but a healthy sparkle of reds, ambers and white heads. Just really healthy looking, - I can tell Cloudburst has been hitting the gym- THICC GIRL 😎
When handling the ground up flower, it has that kinetic sand way of sticking to itself, just like the other Cold Creek's I have checked out, its really neat and can't say I've seen that too often since legalization. Burns wonderfully to a nearly white ash and is a joy to handle.
Aroma 9.0/10
In the jar: Pungent- sharp pine, lemon oil, forest floor, hops. My wife said it smells like she could drink it and there is an aroma in there that reminds of an Oak-ey Chardonay.
In the Grinder- Rotting lime, funky gas- and all of the above. This is a big scent, if you're an apartment dweller or traveling with it, take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the airways for others ( and highway laws for storage in your vehicle, you can pick up some BIG tickets if you don't play your cards right )
Tasting Notes: 9.0/10
Lime gelato, gin spices- juniper, lemon peel, coriander seed, finishes on a very clean, fresh note after giving me a deep lung shiver. Smokes quite thick, rich and luxurious. I get that Cold Creek Kush profile now- this was possibly the nicest one I have tried (by the slimmest of margins) as they have all been quite delicious this year
Experience- 9.0/10
A transcendent, mindful sojourn with just a touch of physical mellowing. It is a quick ticket to reach Elysium- daydreaming of memories past and unexplored futures. At nearly 23% THC I took my time getting to know this delightful strain, and altho very potent, I felt a gentle sort of recreation with tiny doses and scaled up to a pretty trippy effect with higher doses, which seemed to last a long time.
TLDR; 9.25/10
Cloudburst by Van Der Pop is in the top 10 strains I have tried this year. Super sticky, perfectly manicured, really terpey with a 22.8% THC profile, I have no complaints whatsoever and want to go buy another jar of this before it sells out again.
