WTF is The Batch?
Salutations~
I need to dissect this mission statement from The Batch, line by line.
"The Batch is a new, no-frills cannabis brand that's committed to keeping weed good and simple. Forget cultivars, genetic lineage, unique terpene combinations, and fancy strain names. By thinking big and categorizing product by potency rather than cultivar, The Batch is able to offer certified quality cannabis, at prices that beat the black market. The Batch is simply the best value available. The next time you're looking for the best bud, (or pre-roll) for your buck you'll know exactly where to go." 1. "The Batch is a new, no-frills cannabis brand that's committed to keeping weed good and simple."
Owned by High Park Holdings Ltd. who also stable the Canaca, Grail and Marley Naturals brands, among others. The Batch has a minimal web presence with their website stating that all strains contain between 10-15.9% THC and are "never out of stock".
This seems sketchy to me. I have to assume that High Park brands will take lower testing products and then re-sell them under this name, but it also provides a backdoor salesfloor where they can push 3rd party stock as long as it fits between 10-16%. Where does it come from? Is this all legit?
2. "Forget cultivars, genetic lineage, unique terpene combinations, and fancy strain names."
Strain names, terpene percenteges and genetic lineage are not important to every cannabis user, but as a mission statement, it reads like walking into a fruit market and seeing a sign that says FORGET ABOUT RIPENESS, FLAVOR AND NUTRIENTS, WE HAVE CHEAP ASS BANANAS.
What really upsets me here, is that they are selling you on the idea of buying RANDOM cannabis. That we shouldn't have an expectation of whether that banana we bought this week will taste like banana's the next time we go back to the store. That for saving a couple of bucks per gram, we should be forfeiting our right to know what we're getting? ( further than the current packaging snafu )
3. "By thinking big and categorizing product by potency rather than cultivar, The Batch is able to offer certified quality cannabis, at prices that beat the black market."
What are they categorizing here? There are only volumes ( Quarter, Half Quarter ) with no identifiers other than the THC%. You can only ask if the jar you tried has the same LOT# as what is currently on the shelf at the store, or you literally have NO CLUE.
"Certified quality cannabis." I suppose means that it hasn't failed standards testing. They certainly can't be directly comparing the quality of this product to the majority of the legal market these days. And directly comparing your value to the black market?
Don't make me laugh. I don't think you can find an eighth of weed on the black market for over 25$ anymore and it sure as fuck will be INFINITELY better quality than this, from what I have seen. A high-quality ounce of AAA cannabis can be found online for under 125$ in just a few minutes if you are curious to compare- ( Critical Bowl does not endorse black market sales )
4. "The Batch is simply the best value available."
Hexo sells an OZ for 149$ and that is merely the first of the wholesale waves that are going to start arriving when companies need to dump their warehouses full of mid-grade stock. Is this Batch even a good value at 7.50$/g? I don't think it is. You'll burn through it faster than mid-priced high THC strains for sure, with less effect and no enjoyment. ( you can pick this up in Quebec for 17$ tho )
5. "The next time you're looking for the best bud, (or pre-roll) for your buck you'll know exactly where to go."
Low-value aside, these pre-rolls have had an exceptionally poor reception from reviews I have read online. Pre-Rolls are ONLY so widely available because it is affords companies an option to package low-grade or otherwise unsaleable shake by milling it and selling it to you at a mark up for the "convenience" of a pre-rolled 1 gram joint. Now you can just mix up any old strains, who's to know?
Will people want to go back and try this time and time again? I honestly don't know- if there are enough batches of photogenic product for people to feel like its worth a gamble? Maybe. I have seen a few that looked pretty great... Mine? Not so much. I guess it doesn't matter, it's essentially the factory leftovers from High Park's other brands, so it only makes sense to repackage in a way that people can't directly blame anyone for random cannabis when it turns out to be a shite batch.
