This is not going to be a normal review..
I was pleased to see the introduction of a new product available in the retail market for under $7.50 a gram this week, with "the Half Quarter" by The Batch. -from Leafly.Com:
"The Batch is a new, no frills cannabis brand that's committed to keeping weed good and simple. Forget cultivars, genetic lineage, unique terpene combinations, and fancy strain names. By thinking big and categorizing product by potency rather than cultivar, The Batch is able to offer certified quality cannabis, at prices that beat the black market. The Batch is simply the best value available. The next time you're looking for the best bud, (or pre-roll) for your buck you'll know exactly where to go."
To unpack all of that in detail, Check out this post from yesterday. That has my hackles up for some reason. Anyways-
Sometimes it looks like this!~ But sometimes not? |
I was enticed into buying this product based on a reddit post by u/whydobabiesstareatme in the /theOCS sub showing a beautiful pair of big purple nuggets described to be around 15%THC. Seemed like a great buy, other commenters shared that they too had tried this lot and found it to be a decent value.
On the surface, this seems great, value weed is much needed in this country right now, especially if they plan to "beat the black market" with their price scheme and lure legacy customers to their brand. But they are going to have to offer up some consistent quality along with their no-name pricing if they want to really compete.
Let's see what mystery marijuana we ended up with today!
Visual inspection: 4/10
Well, this is certainly not the same bud that I was hoping for. Weight: 3.59g. Light green with a minor smattering of short pistils nuzzled into crevices between the sharp, reaching calyx's. Long, half trimmed leaves obscure many of the visible trichomes- I guess that those leaves were the only thing protecting the poor little crystals.
Sativa in appearance with a loose, open structure, abysmally trimmed and extremely lightweight. There is not a lot to be excited about in my jar.
Green alfalfa, carrot tops, malted sorghum. It has a heavy greenhouse aroma, with zero redeeming qualities after breaking into it. Maybe the faintest touch of pine if I practically inhale it.
Palate: 5/10
A simile for this flavor profile would be: GSC tastes like cookies. Lemon Skunk tastes like lemons and skunk. THIS Half Quarter tastes like Porridge. Or something less delicious that oatmeal. I like oatmeal but even Hemp Flowers have more personality than this.
Experience: 6/10
Objectively, this is a pretty decent day-time experience that still managed to provide some lift if I was in a low THC mood. My wife says she doesn't like the taste, but she appreciates how it doesn't stoke her anxiety like some high THC sativas. Good for long video game sessions, or dates at the tea shop where you don't want to look like a flake or overly impress them with your dank herbs.
TLDR: 4.25/10
To be clear, when you buy The Batch, you are buying a random jar of weed. More than likely it won't be this one. They aren't promising anything other than "the best value available" and while I think that statement is highly debatable, you might get lucky and score something you like. There really is no other product like this in the market today. Cheap. Random. Good? Who knows!
Here are some images from other batches people have posted so you can see the broad range of flowers that are sold under this name.
